Dhaka, 31 July 2026: The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) observed its 42nd founding anniversary with a discussion meeting titled “42 Years of Struggle, Unity and Achievements” at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall, National Press Club, Dhaka.
The discussion meeting was chaired by Amirul Haque Amin, President of NGWF, with welcome remarks delivered by Rafiqul Islam, General Secretary of NGWF, and moderated by Ms. Arifa Akter. The meeting was inaugurated by Anowar Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal (JSD).
Reflecting on NGWF’s 42-year journey, President Amirul Haque Amin highlighted the Federation’s significant achievements in advancing workers’ rights and improving working conditions in Bangladesh’s garment sector. Over the years, NGWF has played an important role in securing May Day as a holiday, weekly holidays, Eid bonuses and maternity leave, as well as compensation and justice for workers affected by major industrial disasters, including the Spectrum Sweater factory collapse and Rana Plaza tragedy. The Federation has also played a leading role in establishing the International Accord and the RSC to strengthen workplace safety.
Nazrul Islam Khan, Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, attended as the Chief Guest. Special Guests included Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, Chief of the Labour Reform Commission, and Advocate Abed Raja of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. Leaders from various trade union and workers’ organizations also participated and shared their views.
Today, NGWF represents 123 registered trade unions, 128,036 members and 14 CBAs, supported by its Central Women’s Brigade, Central Youth Brigade and Anti-Harassment Committee.
The anniversary discussion also highlighted the need to build a sustainable, environmentally friendly, women-friendly and modern garment industry in Bangladesh. Eight major demands were presented:
- Increase maternity leave for women garment workers to six months.
- Eliminate all forms of forced labour.
- Ensure fair prices for garment products by international buyers.
- Remove all barriers to forming trade unions in the garment sector.
- Declare a national minimum wage immediately.
- Ensure workers’ participation in addressing climate change and digitalization/automation.
- Ensure safe and healthy workplaces.
- Ensure implementation of all ratified ILO Conventions.
The 42nd founding anniversary reaffirmed NGWF’s longstanding commitment to workers’ rights, trade union freedom, workplace safety, gender equality and social justice, while renewing its determination to build a stronger and more sustainable future for Bangladesh’s garment workers.
